Tips For Removing Rust From Garage Doors

Rust is one of metal’s worst enemies, and most modern garage doors you’ll find these days are made of one type of metal or another. Metals, as you may know, rust, and this may present a problem especially with something as essential to your home’s security as a garage door.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of these tested methods on how you can remove rust off of your garage door without having to purchase expensive rust removers so you can maintain and prolong the life of your garage door and its mechanisms.

Check Out These Practical Methods Of Removing Rust Off Of Your Garage Door

The Baking Soda and Vinegar Method

This is probably the most well-known method of removing rust off of metal, but there’s a reason why. The reaction between an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda) creates an environment that dissolves rust and lifts it away from the surface of the metal.

Add around a tablespoon of baking soda to a cup of vinegar and let it sit and fizz out. After most the bubbling has stopped, dip your scouring pad or steel wool into this solution and scrub the rust off. This method may need a smidge of elbow grease but we assure you that if you scrub enough, you’ll be sure to remove all the visible rust.

Citric Acid

Add about a tablespoon and a half to a cup of water and you’ve got yourself a cheap rust remover. Just dip a toothbrush, washcloth or scouring pad and have at it. Make sure to get those deeper rust pits as these may cause further damage down the line if they aren’t fully removed.

You can buy citric acid online for just a few bucks and you’ll have an effective way of fighting rust.

Salt and Lemon

While an unlikely solution, there is some sound science behind this rust-busting method. The lemon contains acids that can dissolve the rust. The salt acts as an abrasive to physically lift the rust off of the surface of the metal.

To remove rust using this method, squeeze lemon all over the areas where rust is present and apply a liberal amount of salt to the area. Before the salt dissolves, scrub the areas with a toothbrush or any other soft material.

This method is best used for mild rust spots.

Bonus Rust Prevention Methods

  • Apply an anti-rust coating

You can apply several surface coatings to your garage door such as drying oils, paint, and coatings to protect it from further rust damage.

Some coatings like ceramic and powder coats can offer a very effective and long-lasting method of rust prevention.

  • Perform Regular Maintenance

Rust prevention isn’t a one-time thing. You gotta regularly maintain and look out for any developing rust spots on your garage door if you want to keep it in pristine condition.

Ideally, you should do light maintenance every 3 months and a more in-depth cleaning every 6 months, but you can also get away with annual maintenance if you’re pressed for time.
